is not just an island but also one of the smallest and most
isolated countries in the world. In the south Pacific, Tokelau is approximately 300 miles
north of Samoa and 500 miles east of Tuvalu. It has an area of five square miles and a
population of 1500 on three separate islands, Fakaofu, Atafu, and Nukunonu. The
population is approximately 500 per island and each island is about 50 miles from its
neighbor. Tokelau is the only remaining colony of New Zealand, which has
administered it since 1926.
